U.S. Women's Sixes Training Camp Set Ahead of The World Games

By Brian Logue

SPARKS, Md. — Twenty-six of the nation’s top women’s lacrosse players will be at USA Lacrosse headquarters from June 11-12 for a sixes training camp ahead of The World Games, a quadrennial Olympic-style event that will include women’s lacrosse in the program. The World Games will be held this summer in Chengdu, China with the lacrosse competition taking place from Aug. 7-11.

Head coach Lindsey Munday and her staff will select the 12-player roster for The World Games following this training camp and will hold a staging camp in Los Angeles in early August before heading to China for the international competition.

The June training camp will follow a three-day camp for the U.S. women’s field team at USA Lacrosse headquarters and 23 of the 26 players in the sixes camp will participate in the field team camp earlier in the week.

Ellie Masera is the lone player in the camp that participated in The World Games 2022, but several other players have international sixes experience, including 12 players – Sam Apuzzo, Erin Coykendall, Ally Kennedy, Kenzie Kent, Ally Mastroianni, Marie McCool, Taylor Moreno, Charlotte North, Izzy Scane, Cassidy Spilis, Caylee Waters and Cassidy Weeks – that joined Masera in going undefeated at the USA Lacrosse Experience against Colombia, Puerto Rico and Great Britain last fall in Indianapolis.

Emily Hawryschuk, Mastroianni and Moreno were also on the roster when the U.S. beat Canada 8-7 to win the 2023 Super Sixes in Oshawa, Ontario. Moreno made 14 saves in that win while Hawryschuk led the offense with two goals and an assist and Mastroianni had a goal in the championship game win.

This edition of the World Games will feature up to 5,000 athletes competing in 34 sports and will feature women’s lacrosse as a medal sport for the third time. There will be no men’s competition at The World Games this year.

The United States won the inaugural gold medal in 2017, beating Canada 11-8 in the championship game of a full-field 10v10 format in Wroclaw, Poland. In 2022, Canada beat the U.S. 14-12 in the championship game in the sixes discipline in Birmingham, Alabama.

The World Games 2025 will once again use the sixes format that will be utilized for the 2028 Summer Olympics is Los Angeles. The U.S. team will be led by Munday, a two-time gold medal winner for the U.S. in field lacrosse who was named as the head coach for the women’s sixes program in April 2024.
