John Cheek is one of the most prolific scorers lacrosse has ever seen. Cheek finished his career at Washington (Md.) College in 1977 as the school's all-time leading goal scorer, with 212 goals. he also ranked 13th in team history in career assists.

Cheek earned All-America honors three times, including first team honors in 1976 and 1977. He earned second team honors in 1975. He was named the Division II/III Player of the Year in 1976 and the Division II/III Attackman of the Year in 1976 and 1977. He was also selected for the annual North/South All-Star game in 1977 and led the South squad with five goals in the contest.

In 1978, he was a member of the U.S. team.
