The town of East Aurora, a suburb of Buffalo, has a motto saying, ‘Where good neighbors gather.’

And from October through March, one of the town’s key gathering places is the Classic Rink, where ice hockey activity is nearly non-stop for local players of all ages. Scott More oversees the venue and the Aurora Ice Association.

A few years ago, More, a former collegiate lacrosse player, realized that adding a second sport during the spring and summer would allow his facility to continue being an active gathering place during the months when ice hockey was idle.

This Sunday, June 23, is National Hydration Day and a good chance to remind all lacrosse athletes that proper hydration is essential for helping you to stay in the game and compete at your best.

Did you know that 60-70% of the human body is made up of water? The body loses fluid through the skin as sweat, through the lungs while breathing, and through urination. Physical activity, especially in hot and humid conditions, increases the amount of fluid your body needs to stay properly hydrated.

If your athlete has a bad competition, game, or practice, it can lead to a tense car ride home. Often, parents and caregivers are well-meaning in their efforts to soothe grumpy athletes with advice and reassurances. Unfortunately, we often end up creating a more stressful, angst-filled situation in our attempts to help our athletes.

Those who knew my son, Gordon, knew he was a tremendous hugger. Now understand, Gordon did not go around hugging everyone all the time. Gordon was a very reserved person, but when he hugged you, he meant it. The hug is what prompted me to write this post.

Undefeated CSU San Marcos, champion of the Western Women’s Lacrosse League, has received the number one seed in the Division II bracket of the 2024 USA Lacrosse Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA) National Championship, to be played May 7-10 at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas.

The Cougars (12-0) are making their fourth overall appearance in the championship tournament, and are one of two remaining undefeated teams in the nation.

If you're the parent or caregiver to an athlete with a disability, it can be a daunting process to help them pursue the sports that they're interested in, and it may be tempting to shy away from putting youth with disabilities into traditional sports programs at all. However, youth sport can be incredibly beneficial for a young person's development and well-being, regardless of their ability.
