Lacrosse took Dacia Persky across the country, from her hometown of Las Vegas to one of the county’s most prestigious academic institutions – Wellesley College in Massachusetts. Her transformative time on campus included an idyllic lacrosse experience where she scored more than 200 points in her career.

Cara Morris joined USA Lacrosse as comptroller in 2000. After working at a publicly traded manufacturing company — where “the numbers were just the numbers” and sometimes required 18-hour days to compute — she longed for a change. Non-profit work seemed appealing, and her brother lived in the area. 

Lacrosse (or sports) wasn’t on her mind, nor was a long stint at her next stop. 

“My goal was never to stay at USA Lacrosse for more than three years,” Morris said.

KYLE HARRISON CREPT UPSTAIRS AT 2 A.M., surprised to see the light on in the bedroom of his off-campus residence near Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. When he opened the door, he saw Paul Rabil posted up to the TV watching a grainy VHS of a Hopkins-Carolina lacrosse game.

Renee Scheide does not think twice as she rushes to the aid of a red, white and blue-clad woman, lying on the field in agony, her lacrosse stick strewn at her side. Fortunately for this prone U.S. team member, there is an experienced paramedic nearby.

The New Canaan High School boys’ lacrosse team is celebrating its 50th anniversary as the girls’ team and youth programs enter their 35th and 44th years, respectively.

To say that the high school and youth programs fit hand-in-glove may be an understatement.

“There’s lots of overlap, from people who serve on the boards of both to shared equipment, goals and uniforms,” said Mike Regan, president of the youth program, known officially as the New Canaan Lacrosse Association (NCLA). “We have constant communication.”

YES, CANADA DEFEATED THE U.S. on American soil.

But the enduring legacy of the 2014 world lacrosse championship — USA Lacrosse hosted 38 nations, a record at the time — was that for the first time ever a team from Africa competed on the international stage.
