A certain magic happens when a child grasps his or her first lacrosse stick — a power seldom felt in any other sport. With a stick comes a lifetime connection to a sport and a community.
Richie Moran, a Hall of Fame coach and a lifelong advocate for the sport, died on Sunday at the age of 85.
One of the most beloved figures in the sport’s history, Moran was a Long Island native who first gained notoriety as a standout midfielder for the powerhouse Sewanhaka High School teams. He went on to the University of Maryland, where he helped the Terps win the 1959 national championship.

A desire for working in underserved communities and a love for lacrosse spawned through his child’s involvement in the sport has developed into a passion project for Jason Andersen.
USA Lacrosse will host six Next Collegiate League games on Tierney Field this coming Thursday beginning at 3 p.m. The Next Collegiate League features six men’s lacrosse teams from historic HBCU institutions — Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Lincoln University, Morgan State University and the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore — playing under Olympic-style rules.
The lacrosse community has a long history of paying it forward and it is in that spirit the USA Lacrosse Foundation Legacy Gala has been created. The Legacy Gala will be held June 9, 2022 at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City to celebrate and elevate the impact players, coaches, fans and investors have in shaping the future of the sport while generating important revenue to support key initiatives to fuel the sport’s growth.
Tom Hayes, a key figure in the growth of international lacrosse, a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the all-time winningest coach in Rutgers University men’s lacrosse history, passed away on Monday. He was 82 years old.
George William “Bill” Tanton, longtime columnist for USA Lacrosse Magazine and The Baltimore Evening Sun, died Sunday, Feb. 6 in Baltimore. He was 90 years old. Tanton served for 21 years at USA Lacrosse before retiring in March 2017.
“Bill was a colorful and prolific institution within our evolving organization ever since he came on board,” said Steve Stenersen, former president and CEO at USA Lacrosse. “We were fortunate to benefit from the addition of such a decorated sportswriter to our staff, but we valued his friendship and story-telling even more.”
