National Athletic Training Month is held every March in order to spread awareness about the important work of athletic trainers.

These health care professionals in the field of sports medicine specialize in preventing, diagnosing, and treating muscle and bone injuries among athletes of all ages.

They are also the first ones on the field to render assistance to an injured athlete, and often times the ones helping to oversee rehabilitation programs to get injured athletes back on the field.

Good teammates look out for each other.

That’s the premise behind the Team Up Against Concussions campaign, in which players will notify a coach or athletic trainer if they suspect a teammate might have a concussion.

USA Lacrosse has partnered with the Concussion Legacy Foundation to help promote a healthy team environment in which all players are encouraged to speak up on behalf of a teammate who may be injured.

Commotio cordis is a Latin term, meaning “agitation of the heart.” It’s a rare, but serious, medical condition that is caused by low-impact trauma to the chest, including by a projectile such as a lacrosse ball or baseball. This impact can cause the heart to change its normal rhythm and lead to sudden cardiac arrest.

As a clinical sports psychologist in the Philadelphia area, Dr. Andrew Wolanin is a leading expert on the mental health of athletes, providing counseling services and interventions for athletes at all levels of competition. Based on his research and direct experiences with athletes, Wolanin understands, as well as anyone, the critical importance of mental health awareness.

“There are so many factors related to the mental health of athletes, ranging from performance anxiety to injuries, from specialization to burnout, and so many other issues in between,” Wolanin said.

USA Lacrosse, in partnership with presenting sponsor MedStar Health, is hosting an in-person Sports Medicine Symposium on Friday, January 20, 2023 at the Baltimore Convention Center. With a central theme of athlete mental health and wellness, the one-day event will feature multiple sessions with national experts providing comprehensive information on this important topic.
