There’s a long lacrosse tradition at Brentwood (N.Y.) High School on Long Island, including its status as alma mater for National Lacrosse Hall of Famer Frank Urso, one of the sport’s all-time greats.
But in recent years, Brentwood’s boys’ and girls’ programs haven’t been as competitive as they would like. In fact, the girls’ program has had a glaring need for new gear and equipment that hasn’t been updated in many years. Sticks, goggles, and gloves were among the priority items.

As USA Lacrosse joins with the rest of the lacrosse community in the recognition of April as Celebrate Diversity Month, we're taking a closer look at how increased diversity in lacrosse has opened the door to players, coaches, and program leaders from all walks of life. By spotlighting a variety of different people involved in lacrosse, our hope is to showcase the progress that our sport has made as well as its potential to powerfully impact the next generation of players. A desire for working in underserved communities and a love for lacrosse spawned through his child’s involvement in the sport has developed into a passion project for Jason Andersen.
USA Lacrosse will host six Next Collegiate League games on Tierney Field this coming Thursday beginning at 3 p.m. The Next Collegiate League features six men’s lacrosse teams from historic HBCU institutions — Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Lincoln University, Morgan State University and the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore — playing under Olympic-style rules.
