While it's not a perfect comparison, the WCLA (Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates) and NASCAR do share one thing in common… both organizations launch each new season with their largest event of the year.

For NASCAR, that’s the annual Daytona 500, which brings more eyeballs to the racing circuit than any other event. Similarly, the WCLA launches each February with the Santa Barbara Shootout, which will have more participating teams than any event of the women’s club season.

Sports are so much more than games. Athletes of all ages and levels learn lifelong skills while getting a healthy dose of exercise and endorphins. Participating in team sports can be a great contributor for building good character and good health.

There is always a degree of risk involved with playing sports, such as sprains, strains and concussions. Most sports injuries are minor to moderate. But rare situations that involve the heart can create life-or-death emergencies.

While rare, there’s still the possibility that serious injuries could occur during lacrosse practices or games, just like in other sports. As such, Local Lacrosse Organizations (LLOs) and tournament operators must ensure the preparedness of their organization for handling emergency situations.

It is important that administrators, staff, and coaches are prepared to respond to emergency situations, and a key step in preparing for emergencies involves the development of an Emergency Action Plan (EAP).

From the 1960’s through the 1980’s, Vin LoBello was one of the most impactful men in lacrosse, serving 30 years as the chief referee for New England. He would coordinate game assignments for all high school and college games in the region, recruit and train new officials, and be on the field for many of the top collegiate games.

There have been several dynasty programs in Division III women’s lacrosse since the NCAA began its championship era in 1985. Trenton State (now College of New Jersey), Middlebury, Salisbury and Gettysburg have all had runs at the top of the class, but one program often overlooked is Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa.

As a former collegiate lacrosse player at Ithaca College, Patti Klecha-Porter remained connected to the game after college by serving as the assistant coach for the Wesleyan University’s women’s team. When that tenure ended after seven seasons, Klecha-Porter knew she needed to find another connection to the game.
